Trimontium Underpass
A competition for transformation and revitalisation
The Competition
Plovdiv Municipality announces a competition for a conceptual architectural and urban design solution for the complete transformation and revitalisation of the Trimontium underpass. This key urban zone is one of the busiest traffic and pedestrian arteries in the heart of the city. Its strategic location makes it a calling card for Plovdiv, yet its present condition falls short of the high aesthetic and functional standards called for by the cultural and historical significance of the site.
The competition calls for a solution that turns the underpass from a purely transitory space into a significant urban destination and a cultural focal point.
Awards
1st Prize: €15,000 (fifteen thousand euros), together with the prospect of a subsequent commission for the technical and detailed design, awarded through a negotiated procedure without prior publication under Art. 79 (1) (13) of the Public Procurement Act, subject to the applicable Bulgarian legislation and to secured funding.
2nd Prize: €8,000 (eight thousand euros).
3rd Prize: €5,000 (five thousand euros).
Two honourable mentions of €1,000 (one thousand euros) each, at the jury's discretion.
Schedule
21 August 2026 (Friday) - competition announced.
21 October 2026, 17:00(GMT+3) (Wednesday) - DEADLINE for submission of entries.
22 – 27 October 2026 - technical committee review.
28 October 2026 - entries made available to the jury.
2 – 6 November 2026 - jury session (evaluation).
9 November 2026 (Monday) - official announcement of the winners.
10 – 15 December 2026 - exhibition of all entries and public discussion with the finalists.
The Trimontium underpass, set in the heart of the city at the crossroads of the main traffic and pedestrian flows, is more than a piece of infrastructure. It is a key element of this vision and must be transformed so that it works as a powerful cultural gateway — one that not only presents the city's rich historical heritage but also lastingly establishes Plovdiv on the international stage as a leading centre of world cultural heritage.

Documents
The site of the underpass is of exceptional archaeological and cultural value, lying directly within the boundaries of the historical zone „Philippopolis – Trimontium – Plovdiv“. It forms an integral part of a group archaeological and architectural monument of culture of national significance. Its immediate proximity to the ancient Forum complex of Philippopolis, together with the archaeological structures within the underpass itself, calls for an exceptionally sensitive and responsible approach to any intervention.
Assessment
The competition is an open, international, single-stage, anonymous architectural competition for a conceptual design.
Entries are assessed by an independent jury made up of an odd number of members.
The jury will assess entries on the basis of a comprehensive analysis, giving priority to the quality of the architectural environment and to the treatment of the architectural heritage.
